GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG.
22nd. February, 1919.
I have the honour to invite Your
Lordship's attention to the enclosed letter from a man
named Crispin Pereira who was permitted to proceed on
active service from this Colony in May, 1918, and who is
now serving as a Gunner with the R.G.A. in Egypt.
His
address appears at the end of the enclosure.
This Government considers that in
the circumstances, it would be best for this man to return
to Hongkong direct from Egypt after demobilisation,
without proceeding to England in the first place.
This Government has no option as to
providing for Mr. Pereira's return to the Colony, this
having practically been assured, but his position is such
that it would be most undesirable that he should be
allowed to bring an English girl back as his wife.
Mr. Pereira is not likely to obtain
employment on his return which would warrant his marrying
even among his own people.
I should be glad to hear that you have
been able to arrange accordingly.
RIGHT HONOURABLE
VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,

80.
I have the honour to be,
Ky Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
Cauterem
Officer Administering the Government.
